Compare like with like
When comparing private treatment costs, clarify surgeon fees, implants where relevant, hospital stay, medicines, investigations and possible additional charges.
Plan aftercare before surgery
Ask who will review wounds, remove sutures if needed, manage physiotherapy and respond to complications after you return to the UK.
Get a clinical opinion before comparing prices
Send the relevant reports, scans and treatment history first. A meaningful comparison requires the same diagnosis and broadly comparable treatment plan; otherwise two quotations may represent very different procedures, implants, hospital stays or levels of care.
Medical travel documentation
UK passport holders should check the current Government of India entry and medical-visa rules before making travel arrangements. The official e-Visa system includes medical categories for eligible travellers. Hospital documentation may be required, and visa approval remains with the Indian authorities.
How to compare an Indian hospital and specialist
Look beyond headline price. Ask who will actually perform the procedure, what relevant experience the team has, what facilities and supporting specialties are available, what is included in the quotation and how complications or unexpected findings would be managed.

Allow enough time before the return flight
Do not assume that hospital discharge means immediate fitness to fly. The appropriate interval depends on the procedure, mobility, pain control, wound or catheter issues, thrombosis risk and the treating team's assessment. Build flexibility into the return booking whenever possible.
Make the UK follow-up plan before leaving India
Take home the discharge summary, procedure or operation note, pathology results where relevant, prescriptions and copies of important imaging. Clarify which follow-up can be done in the UK, what needs review by the Indian team and whom to contact if a problem develops after returning home.
