HoLEP surgery in India

A practical international-patient pathway for benign prostate enlargement and HoLEP treatment.

HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) is an endoscopic operation used for benign prostate enlargement. It removes obstructing prostate tissue through the urinary passage rather than through an abdominal incision.

Who may be evaluated for HoLEP?

Patients with bothersome urinary symptoms, recurrent retention, catheter dependence, bladder stones, recurrent infection, bleeding or other complications of bladder-outlet obstruction may be considered for surgery. HoLEP is one surgical option; whether it is appropriate depends on the individual patient.

Why international patients ask about HoLEP

  • It can be used across a broad range of prostate sizes when performed by an experienced team.
  • It is performed endoscopically, without an external abdominal incision.
  • Hospital stay and catheter duration are often relatively short, although recovery varies.
  • Tissue is removed and can be sent for histopathology.

Planning treatment in India

Before travel, the treating team may want the patient's symptom history, ultrasound or prostate imaging, urine studies, kidney function, PSA history, medications and relevant cardiopulmonary records. Some tests may need to be repeated in India depending on recency and clinical circumstances.

What reports should you send before travelling?

A pre-travel review is more useful when it includes the urinary symptom and retention history, any catheter details, ultrasound or other prostate imaging, post-void residual urine if available, urine studies, kidney function, PSA history and a current medication list. Previous prostate procedures and relevant heart, lung or anaesthetic records should also be mentioned. The treating team may still advise repeat or additional tests after arrival.

HoLEP compared with other BPH procedures

HoLEP is one of several procedures used for bladder-outlet obstruction caused by benign prostate enlargement. TURP and other endoscopic or minimally invasive approaches may also be appropriate in selected patients. The comparison should not be based on a single feature such as prostate size or length of stay; anatomy, bladder function, bleeding risk, priorities and local surgical expertise all matter.

For a focused comparison, see TURP vs HoLEP.

Recovery and flying home

International patients should plan beyond the discharge date. Urinary frequency, urgency, burning, intermittent blood in the urine and temporary leakage can occur during recovery, and the pattern varies between patients. Before booking the return flight, ask the treating urologist about catheter removal, activity, hydration, medicines, warning symptoms and the appropriate timing of travel for your individual recovery.

Questions to ask a HoLEP team

  • Why is HoLEP appropriate for my prostate and symptoms?
  • What alternatives should I consider?
  • What is the surgeon's experience with HoLEP and prostates similar to mine?
  • What should I expect regarding catheterisation, hospital stay and early urinary symptoms?
  • How are bleeding, infection, temporary leakage and other complications handled?
  • When should histopathology and follow-up results be reviewed?

After returning home

IndiaMedHealth can help coordinate follow-up communication with the Indian treating team and, where feasible, continuity of care with doctors in the patient's home country.

The information here is educational and does not establish that HoLEP is suitable for a particular patient. Procedure choice should follow assessment by a qualified urologist.
